$1 Trump Coins Hit the Market Amid Semiquincentennial Celebrations
The U.S. Mint has started selling gold-colored $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump's likeness, but at a higher price than expected. The coins were announced in July and are part of the nation's semiquincentennial anniversary celebrations. The price of the coin depends on quantity, ranging from about $1.55 to $2.44 per coin.
The U.S. Mint said that while the coins can be used as legal tender, they are primarily marketed as collectibles. The Trump administration has justified the creation of these coins under a 2020 law allowing new designs to commemorate the country's 250th anniversary.
The $1 Trump coin is made mostly of copper with small amounts of zinc, manganese, and nickel, but no actual gold is used in its production. As part of the sale, the U.S. Mint is randomly including 250,000 special-issue coins with a 'July 4th' privy mark.
