$100 Oil: Escalating Middle East Tensions Spark Inflation Fears
The global economy is bracing for a potential energy-driven inflation surge as Brent crude oil price breaches $100 a barrel. The benchmark contract rose to $100.19 on Wednesday, marking its highest level since July 24. This significant milestone comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, where the US and Iran are engaging in a series of military actions.
The latest developments saw the US attack five Iranian crude oil carriers overnight, prompting Iran's retaliation with missile attacks on US forces in Jordan and strikes on shipping. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington would continue to target Iranian oil tankers in response to attempted attacks on US warships.
Global stocks have come under pressure as a result of these events, with the S&P, Dow, and Nasdaq experiencing small losses. European stocks plummeted to one-week lows, particularly in the industrial and banking sectors. Canada's blue-chip stock futures also declined slightly.
