$100 Oil Sets Stage for Higher Rates and a Cryptocurrency Sell-Off

The recent surge in oil prices has raised concerns about its impact on Bitcoin. Brent crude touched a seven-week high near $99 a barrel, and WTI climbed above $92 after Iran announced plans to declare a maritime 'exclusion zone' around the Strait of Hormuz. This follows US strikes on three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend.

The price increase has led to inflation concerns, with U.S. inflation already sitting above the Fed's 2% target before this latest escalation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has maintained a hawkish tone, and traders have been pricing in real odds of a rate hike rather than a cut.

The Federal Reserve is caught between two conflicting goals: keeping inflation low and maintaining a healthy job market. A cooling labor market would normally argue for lower rates, but rising oil-driven inflation could lead to higher rates. Some forecasters now put the odds of a September rate hike above 50%.

Higher interest rates hurt Bitcoin as investors seek safer assets with yields. When Treasury yields rise, money flows out of riskier assets like Bitcoin and into bonds or cash. The recent oil price surge has already led to a decline in Bitcoin's value, which slipped toward $79,700 when US strikes pushed oil higher.
