$1.5B Gas Royalty Accounting Blunder Linked to Spreadsheet Error

The British Columbia government has acknowledged a $1.5 billion error in its natural gas royalty accounting, blaming a spreadsheet mistake that occurred during currency conversion.

According to Premier David Eby, this 'serious mistake' resulted in an overstatement of revenue, which will need to be corrected by shaving off approximately $300 million from provincial revenues for the next four years. The total correction will equal around $1.462 billion.

The error was brought to light after a letter from the Treaty 8 First Nations was made public, which initially attributed the issue to the government's failure to account for transportation costs. However, ministry officials dispute this characterization and claim that most of the discrepancy is due to a currency conversion error.
