$18 Million Gas Savings Expected in Uzbekistan's Leak Reduction Project
The government of Uzbekistan has introduced a new financing mechanism to reduce natural gas losses and support ongoing repairs of its gas infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, over 1,000 locations have been identified where gas leaks are occurring across the country.
An estimated 35 million cubic meters of gas is lost annually due to these leaks, which could supply approximately 12,500 households for a year. To address this issue, a $10.6 million grant has been signed with the World Bank, which will fund detecting and fixing leaks as well as measuring the exact volume of saved gas.
The project aims to prevent the loss of around 47,500 metric tons of natural gas per year by 2029, resulting in approximately $18 million in annual financial savings. This will help preserve additional gas supplies for residential consumers and commercial enterprises while creating a stable funding source for maintaining and modernizing the national gas transport system.
