$200K Gold Scam Foiled by Quick-Thinking D.C. Dealer
A gold dealer in Washington D.C. recently thwarted an attempt by scammers to obtain over $200,000 worth of gold bars from an unsuspecting customer.
The 85-year-old victim was contacted via email and phone call by individuals posing as U.S. federal agents, who claimed his bank funds were at risk of being lost and needed to be converted into gold bullion.
Believing the story, the man visited a local gold dealer to purchase more than $200,000 in gold bars. However, the dealer recognized potential signs of fraud and contacted authorities, leading to an operation that resulted in the arrest of two suspects when they arrived to collect the gold.
The suspects, identified as Chu Lin, 50, of New York, and Xiean Cheng, 42, of North Carolina, were charged with second-degree financial fraud. The incident highlights a larger pattern of scams targeting older Americans, with over 201,000 scam complaints filed in 2024 resulting in losses of more than $7.7 billion.
