The Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2027 is expected to be higher than initially forecasted, according to early projections. The COLA, which determines annualized benefit payments, is anticipated to increase by between $59.6 billion and $63.0 billion.

This represents a boost of approximately $14.9 billion to $18.2 billion more than the 2.7% adjustment projected by the Trustees for December 2026. The increased COLA will result in higher benefit payments, with the typical retired-worker payment increasing by around $75 to $79 per month.

The July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is set to be released on Wednesday, marking the start of a three-month period that will determine the ultimate adjustment. Oil prices are being closely watched, as fluctuations in this commodity can significantly impact inflation and, subsequently, the COLA.
