$3 Billion Injection: CBN Secures Approval for NNPC Loan Refinancing
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has secured approval from the National Economic Council (NEC) to refinance the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited's (NNPC) crude oil-backed loan. The refinancing, known as Project Gazelle 2, will inject $3 billion into the country's external reserves and help alleviate pressure on the naira.
The original loan of $4.5 billion was secured in 2023, but under the new arrangement, only $1.5 billion will be used to repay the outstanding balance, while the remaining $3 billion will be transferred to the CBN to strengthen foreign exchange reserves and support the naira.
Economists say that the refinancing is a strategy to buy time, rather than a fresh economic breakthrough. They note that it would only prove sustainable if backed by stronger foreign exchange earnings and higher crude oil production.
