$3 Billion Pipeline Project Connects Patagonian Oil Fields to Atlantic Ocean
A massive $3 billion pipeline project is underway in Argentine Patagonia to transport oil from landlocked fields to the Atlantic Ocean. The Vaca Muerta Sur pipeline spans 437 kilometers and will connect the town of Allen to the Punta Colorada port, reducing transportation costs and enabling direct access to Asian markets.
The shale rock beneath northern Patagonia has been a surprise for geologists since the first horizontal wells went in, with production surpassing 447,000 barrels per day as of March 2025. The Vaca Muerta formation is now accounting for roughly two-thirds of Argentina's total oil production.
The pipeline project, which is being built by a special purpose company called VMOS, will have an initial capacity of 180,000 barrels per day and will be expanded to reach up to 550,000 barrels per day in Phase II. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with full capacity targeted for 2027.
