A $30 million oil refinery has started operations in Sar-e-Pul province, northern Afghanistan. The facility can process 600 tonnes of crude oil daily.

The refinery sources crude from the Amu Darya oil basin's Qashqari, Zumrad Sai, and Angot fields. It refines the crude into diesel, petrol, and mazut to meet domestic demand.

Financial Manager Hasibullah Amirzai said using locally extracted crude marks an important step in increasing Afghanistan's domestic petroleum production.
