$50 Billion Opportunity: Nigeria Eyes Offshore Oil Boom
Nigeria's efforts to boost its oil production have taken a significant step forward as the country aims to attract $50 billion in new investment for offshore oil and gas projects. According to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), this potential influx of capital could help Nigeria reach its goal of producing 3 million barrels per day by 2030.
The regulator's chief executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, emphasized that the country needs to upskill and hire more skilled workers, including those in digital industries, to take advantage of these new opportunities. Currently, annual investments in Nigeria's oil and gas industry have dwindled to just $2 billion, down from a peak of $26 billion in 2014.
Nigeria has shown steady growth in its crude and condensate output this year, with total oil output rising from 1.48 million barrels per day in February to 1.735 million barrels per day in June, according to the NUPRC. The country's state-owned oil and gas company, NNPC, plans to increase production to 2 million barrels per day over the next two years.
