$5k Gold Still Within Reach Despite Surging Prices
Gold prices have been steadily rising, and despite already surpassing forecasts, Bank of America still predicts they could reach $5,000 an ounce. The current price is around $4,358, about 15% below the target.
The recent surge in gold prices can be attributed to softer U.S. labor and inflation data, which has lowered expectations for additional Federal Reserve rate hikes. This unexpected development has caught Wall Street trading desks off guard, causing spot prices to recover towards multi-month highs.
According to Michael Widmer, head of metals research at Bank of America, the firm still sees $5,000 per ounce within reach once the Fed's tightening cycle ends. He notes that the large U.S. government debt load will ultimately limit how high interest rates can stay.
Morgan Stanley holds an even more aggressive view, with a long-term bull-case target of $5,700 an ounce. Amy Gower, head of metals and mining strategy at Morgan Stanley, points to institutional investment flows as the key driver of the next major advance in gold prices.
