$600m Palm Oil Import Bill Highlights Nigeria's Lost Dominance in Global Market

Nigeria's $600 million palm oil import bill is a stark reminder of its lost dominance in the global market. Despite being one of the crop's natural homes, Nigeria now relies heavily on imports to meet domestic demand.

Lawal Olusola Lawal, an industry stakeholder, attributed the country's decline to years of neglect and inadequate investment. He noted that Nigeria had historically contributed about 45 per cent of global vegetable oil demand but has since lost its competitive position.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Nigeria imports not only crude palm oil but also industrial derivatives used in manufacturing, including creamers and noodles. This results in a substantial foreign exchange loss, which could have been retained through increased domestic production and processing.
