$70 Oil Price Threshold May Decide Energy Sector's Fate

The energy sector's future hangs in the balance as oil prices approach a crucial threshold. According to Bloomberg Intelligence strategist Mike McGlone, the market's resilience may be the only thing preventing crude oil from plummeting to $40 per barrel by 2027. However, if West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stays above $70 a barrel, producers will argue that geopolitical risk and consumption support investment.

Despite predictions of $150 or even $200 oil during the five-month US-Iran conflict, WTI only peaked near $126 in May and averaged around $101 from late February to June 11. It has since returned to about $70 in early July. China's crude imports fell to their lowest level in nearly a decade in June, reflecting EV adoption, weaker petrochemical processing, and lower fuel exports.

Domestic production reached a record 13.93 million barrels per day by April, while a coordinated 400 million-barrel strategic-reserve release in March cushioned disruptions. However, politics discouraged conviction, with President Donald Trump's shifting comments on diplomacy and Hormuz flows wrong-footing bullish trades.

The shale industry is facing a new era of higher costs and more complex development as core shale oil inventory in the US depletes, according to Enverus director Alex Ljubojevic. This shift will reshape the cost curve and redefine investment strategies across the continent.
