$900M German Investment in Louisiana LNG Sparks Controversy Over Energy Infrastructure
The German energy company RWE has agreed to invest $900 million in Louisiana LNG, a major liquefied natural gas project. The investment is part of a larger settlement between RWE and the Trump administration, which requires RWE to give up offshore wind leases in New York, California, and Louisiana.
The settlement, worth nearly $4 billion, has been criticized by Democrats and several states, who are challenging the agreements and seeking to recover the money for taxpayers. Critics question whether the $900 million investment actually creates new energy infrastructure, as Stonepeak, a private equity firm co-founded and led by Australian billionaire Michael Dorrell, had already invested billions in Louisiana LNG.
RWE claims it independently chose the investment based on its business interests, despite the fact that Dorrell donated $1 million to the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee shortly after Trump won the 2024 election. The administration denies any connection between Dorrell's political donations and the Louisiana LNG investment.
