African Gas Producers Diversify Strategy with Domestic Power Focus

African natural gas producers are shifting their focus from pure LNG export strategies to one that balances domestic power and industrial growth. According to the African Energy Chamber, this change is driven by a desire to fully realize the value of their reserves for local economic development.

The Atlantic Gas Corridor is an example of this new approach, where recent offshore discoveries in Mauritania and Senegal are being developed with a two-pronged strategy that serves both international LNG customers and domestic gas infrastructure. This approach addresses the need to convert natural resources into affordable power and industrial capability for local populations.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, emphasized the importance of developing commercially viable domestic gas markets to unlock the continent's complete energy potential. He stressed that upcoming gas initiatives should be structured to draw international investment while providing dependable electricity, industrial expansion, and energy security for local populations.
