Africa's Mineral Power Takes Centre Stage at African Mining Week

African countries are seeking to become more involved in the development and pricing of their mineral resources, rather than simply exporting raw materials. According to a recent report, Africa holds around 30% of the world's mineral reserves, giving its producers greater influence at a time when governments and industries are seeking secure and diversified supply chains.

The S&P Global Energy delegation will join African Mining Week in Cape Town from October 14-16, bringing market data, pricing expertise, and commercial insights to conversations about the continent's growing role in global mineral supply. The gathering arrives as demand for strategic materials such as lithium, graphite, cobalt, copper, and rare earth elements reshapes investment decisions across clean energy, defense, and advanced manufacturing.

As global demand changes Africa's position in mineral markets, countries with valuable mineral deposits are seeking a larger role in how resources are developed, priced, and processed. This shift from the traditional model of exporting raw materials while much of the economic value is created elsewhere could lead to African producers becoming active 'price setters.'
