Africa's Mining Sector Shifts into High Gear Amid Global Demand

A significant shift is underway in Central and East Africa's mining sectors, driven by explosive demand for cobalt, copper, graphite, lithium, and rare earth elements. This surge has led to a massive increase in exploration and infrastructure development, reshaping the region's economic geography, according to Daniel Thole, principal adviser at Africa Practice.

Regional governments are leveraging their geological wealth to rewrite global supply chain dynamics, moving away from the traditional 'extract and export' model towards in-country beneficiation, tighter regulatory frameworks, and strategic cross-border logistics. The focus is on local value addition, as countries like Tanzania have made gold licence holders sell at least 20% of their output locally.

The region's mineral abundance has triggered intense geopolitical competition between Western nations and China, with the latter maintaining a near-monopoly on processing and mining infrastructure for over a decade. The West is countering this by securing independent supply lines, with initiatives like the Lobito Corridor, an integrated rail-and-port network linking the DRC and Zambia to Angola's Lobito port.

The corridor, backed by a $753-million financing package, aims to reduce transport times to European and American markets. By providing an alternative to traditional routes often dominated by Chinese logistics networks, the West is attempting to anchor its industrial security directly to African soil.
