AI Stocks Plummet as Leaders Call for Safety-Driven Slowdown Amid Rising Oil Prices
Artificial intelligence stocks declined globally on Monday after prominent industry leaders warned of a slowdown to ensure human safety. The warning came from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who cited concerns that AI could become capable of leading a swarm of agents that could take over the internet within six to 12 months.
Nvidia, which has seen its profits soar due to its chips being used in AI training models, dropped 3.4%. SpaceX fell 2% after Elon Musk expressed agreement with Amodei's views. Softbank Group lost 10.7% in Tokyo following OpenAI's Sam Altman's support for the concept of a slowdown.
The decline in AI stocks was partly offset by gains in other sectors, including software companies that had fallen earlier due to concerns about AI-powered competition. Intuit rose 5.5%, Autodesk climbed 7.8%, and Adobe added 5.3%.
