Alaska Natural Gas Supply Crunch Threatens Rolling Blackouts

Southcentral Alaska is facing a growing concern over its natural gas supply, which could lead to rolling blackouts if a long-term solution isn't found. The Mat-Su Borough Mayor Edna DeVries warned that the region's energy needs cannot be neglected any longer, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The proposed solution lies in the Alaska LNG project, which would bring natural gas from the North Slope to the south. Utility leaders are also preparing for short-term measures, including rolling blackouts, as a last resort if there isn't enough gas available.

Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance highlighted the city's efforts to expand solar power on municipal rooftops and review buildings for immediate energy savings. She stressed that ensuring Alaskans have heat in their homes and power in the grid is crucial.
