Albanese Government Faces Criticism for Fossil Fuel Approvals Despite Emissions Target
The Australian government has been criticized for its approval of 36 new, expanded, or extended coal, oil, and gas developments since taking office. This move has raised concerns about the country's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are necessary to meet its 2035 target of cutting emissions by 62-70% below 2005 levels.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended the government's decision, stating that gas underwrites manufacturing and LNG exports to Japan and South Korea, while coal royalties fund state budgets. However, critics argue that this policy is contradictory to the government's promise of a future-proof economy.
The Climate Council has reported that these fossil fuel projects will outlive the parliament that approved them, with some approvals dating back as far as May 2022. This has led to concerns about the impact on Australia's climate goals and its reputation internationally.
