Albertans are now subject to an environmental fee on windshield washer fluid containers. The new policy, which came into effect this month, charges a 48-cent fee per four-litre container.

The Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) clarifies that the environmental fee is not refundable, unlike the deposit component of Alberta's beverage container system.

ARMA chief executive officer Ed Gugenheimer explains that environmental fees fund the collection, transportation, and recycling of end-of-life materials. He emphasizes that windshield washer fluid containers should be taken to participating Used Oil Materials collection sites, not to bottle depots or blue-bin recycling.
