Alberta Erases Billion-Dollar Deficit as Oil Revenues Soar

The Alberta government has reported a dramatic turnaround in its fiscal fortunes. According to the province's first-quarter fiscal update, the budget deficit is expected to be erased and replaced by a surplus of over $2 billion. This is a stark reversal from the $9.4 billion deficit forecast in Budget 2026.

The increase in oil revenues is driving this change. Natural resource revenue has risen by $9.7 billion, pushing total revenue $11.7 billion above budget.

Finance Minister Jason Nixon hailed the news as 'good news for Alberta and for Alberta's future,' saying it means the province is on track for its sixth consecutive surplus year.
