Alberta Feed Grain Prices Plummet as Harvest Brings Early Crop

Feed grain prices in southern Alberta have plummeted since July 1 due to thin trading volumes and seasonal price weakness. According to Jim Beusekom, president of Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge, Alta., the price of feed barley has dropped from C$315 per tonne to C$270, while feed wheat is down to C$285/tonne and feed corn at C$305/tonne.

The decline is attributed to the early start of harvest, which has brought forward the crop by one to two weeks. 'The flow of grain is like a pipeline and if we open up that pipeline two weeks earlier, it's just not ready for it,' Beusekom said.
