Alberta Heartland Thrives Amid Shifts in US-Canada Trade
The Alberta Industrial Heartland is one of the world's leading industrial clusters, attracting massive investment to the region. Spanning 582 square kilometers, it comprises over 40 companies operating in the production of fuels, fertilizers, petrochemicals, chemicals, hydrogen, electricity, natural gas liquids, plastics, and other value-added products.
The Heartland has already seen $50 billion in existing capital investment, with another $30 billion under construction. Once operational, total capital investment is expected to reach approximately $80 billion by the early 2030s.
Kirsten Hillman, former Canadian Ambassador to the United States from 2019 to 2026, spoke at the Alberta Industrial Heartland Association's annual conference in Edmonton, highlighting the region's strengths. She noted that trade agreements foster integration and provide stability, allowing companies to connect easily with infrastructure, suppliers, customers, and other operators.
Hillman emphasized that supply chain integration is key to the success of the relationship between Canada and the United States. 70% of what Canada sells to the US are inputs into U.S. manufacturing, including energy products, agricultural inputs, minerals, lumber, etc.
