Alberta Independence Plan Unveiled Amid $200 Billion Cost Warning

An Alberta independence plan has been unveiled by an advocacy group, but a new analysis warns that separation could cost more than $200 billion. The Alberta Transition Council released a comprehensive transition plan outlining how an independent Alberta would handle key issues such as currency and banking, defence, policing, immigration, pensions, trade, and oil and gas.

The report's author, lawyer Keith Wilson, claims that Alberta already has much of the necessary infrastructure in place for independence. 'We're not starting from scratch,' he said. 'The people, the resources, the skills, the organizational structures are already in place.' According to Wilson, the only change would be shifting allegiance from Ottawa to Edmonton or Calgary.

The plan is part of a broader effort by Alberta separatists to gain support for independence. However, critics have raised concerns about the potential costs and consequences of such a move.
