Alberta Oil and Gas Sector Hits Methane Emissions Target Ahead of Schedule
A new funding boost of nearly $30 million from Alberta's Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program will help reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. The funding comes from levies paid by producers under the province's carbon pricing system.
Oil and gas producers in Alberta have already surpassed their target of reducing methane emissions by 45 per cent below 2014 levels, achieving a 51 per cent reduction in 2024. Similarly, producers in British Columbia are ahead of schedule, reducing methane emissions by 51 per cent as of 2023.
The funding will support the Methane Reduction Deployment Program and the Methane Reduction Demonstration Program, both of which aim to reduce emissions intensity by 20 per cent on average per project. Companies like Spartan Controls have already seen success in slashing methane emissions with their technologies, which could be exported to other regions.
