Alberta Oil Sands Shift Towards Balance and Capital Discipline
The oil sands in Alberta have undergone significant growth over the past decade, but their next chapter is likely to be defined by balance. Premier Danielle Smith and the federal government want more production, while operators are prioritizing capital discipline and operational reliability.
Since 2015, bitumen production has increased by 41% from 2.53 million barrels per day to approximately 3.56 million barrels per day in 2024. By 2034, the Alberta Energy Regulator forecasts raw bitumen production could reach about 4.06 million barrels per day.
Operators are focusing on extracting more production from existing facilities through debottlenecking and improving maintenance practices, rather than building new standalone developments. Suncor, for example, plans to add approximately 100,000 barrels per day of additional upstream production by 2028 while targeting a $5-per-barrel reduction in its corporate WTI breakeven price.
