Alberta Oil Sands Shift Towards Discipline and Innovation
The oil sands in Alberta have undergone significant transformation over the past two decades. What was once characterized by massive growth and development is now shifting towards a more disciplined and innovative approach.
According to the Alberta Energy Regulator, raw bitumen production could reach approximately 4.06 million barrels per day by 2034 under its base case scenario. However, this growth will not be driven by new giant greenfield projects like those developed during the oil sands construction boom of the 2000s and early 2010s.
Instead, operators are focusing on extracting more production from existing facilities through debottlenecking, improved maintenance practices, better reservoir management, additional well pads, automation, and improved reliability. This approach is expected to sustain and expand production without replacing enormous percentages of output every year.
Suncor is a prime example of this new growth model. The company plans to add approximately 100,000 barrels per day of upstream production by 2028 while targeting a US$5-per-barrel reduction in its corporate WTI breakeven price.
