Alberta Oil Sands Shifts Towards Capital-Efficient Growth
Alberta's oil sands have undergone significant growth in recent years, but the industry is shifting towards a new model of production. According to EnergyNow, operators are focusing on extracting more production from existing facilities through debottlenecking, improved maintenance practices, and better reservoir management.
The Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wants significantly more production, and the federal government has become more receptive to additional energy infrastructure. However, oil sands operators are making it clear that growth must be accompanied by capital discipline, operational reliability, lower costs, and continued technological innovation.
Suncor is a prime example of this new approach. The company plans to add approximately 100,000 barrels per day of additional upstream production by 2028 while targeting a US$5-per-barrel reduction in its corporate WTI breakeven price.
