Alberta Premier Rejects Tariff Retaliation as Trade Dispute Escalates

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has rejected calls to tax or curtail oil exports as part of Canada's response to US tariffs. Instead, she will form a new cabinet committee and launch an online portal to help businesses affected by the dispute.

Smith argued that taxing or restricting energy exports could prompt Washington to retaliate against US oil and natural gas exports to Ontario and Quebec, leading to significant job losses.

The US imposed a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods last week, with Canada's counter-tariffs set to take effect on September 8.
