Alberta Premier Rules Out Crown Corporation for Natural Gas Pipelines

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her government is unlikely to launch a Crown corporation for natural gas pipelines in the province. The decision comes after a leaked report recommended creating two Crown corporations to spur new transmission lines, costing between $53.9 million and $162.6 million.

The report suggested that Alberta risks data centre builders going elsewhere if a quick solution for natural gas supply isn't secured. Smith called TC Energy's dominance in the market a 'monopoly', saying it's an 'active conversation' to get more competition and choice.

Smith has met with TC Energy leadership and other private sector companies, believing there's enough private interest for further development that makes a Crown corporation unlikely. However, she didn't rule out legislation to spur new natural gas infrastructure, which could land the province in court with TC Energy.
