Alberta Separation Movement Gains Momentum Despite Federal Opposition
A letter to the editor published in The Albertan has challenged the views on Alberta's separation movement, specifically those expressed by Chris Nelson in his opinion piece. Mary Flemming, a resident of Innisfail, wrote to express her disagreement with Nelson's stance.
Flemming pointed out several contradictions that she believes promote independence for Alberta. She questioned the notion that the federal Liberals have 'ditched' odious restrictions on the energy industry, citing the $26 million investment in 17 clean energy projects across Alberta and Saskatchewan announced by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson on July 3, 2026.
The letter also highlighted the government's plans for low-carbon regulations and Indigenous consultations, which Flemming believes will eventually bring any meaningful oil and gas project to a halt. She argued that these developments contradict Nelson's claim that hopes for an independent Alberta are dust.
Flemming emphasized that the upcoming October 19 referendum question is not a vote for independence but rather a vote to have a referendum on the topic within two to three years. She wrote that this opportunity will allow Albertans to discuss the pros and cons of independence openly, honestly, and fearlessly.
