Alberta Separatists Find Unlikely Ally in Donald Trump
Alberta separatists in Canada have found an unlikely ally in US President Donald Trump. They see his presidency as making their independence possible, with the United States a ready customer for Alberta's oil and gas should they split from Canada.
The separatists are furious about Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's friction with Trump and the fraying ties to their southern neighbor. Some place their faith in Trump, not in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney - whom they view as part of a Davos 'cabal'. They believe Trump's presidency has created an opportunity for Alberta's independence.
A few even hope the Trump administration might help their cause. The Alberta Prosperity Project is trying to seek a C$500-billion US government loan to fund the province's 'seamless departure' from Canada.
