Albertan Poll Results on Independence Overhyped

A recent online poll of 750 Albertans conducted by Research Co. found that 44% of respondents said they would leave the province if it became independent in an upcoming referendum.

The same poll, which also asked other non-serious questions such as whether or not people trust hockey player Connor McDavid on the issue of Alberta separating from Canada, was modelled to grab headlines rather than reflect the will of Albertans.

In fact, the results were so far-fetched that legacy media outlets like CTV treated it as if it was a legitimate prediction. However, experts argue that people are unlikely to abandon their jobs, homes, and social ties at such a high rate over a hypothetical future constitutional outcome.

Studies have shown that actual interprovincial migration in Canada is driven more by factors such as oil prices, housing, and employment rather than referendum talk. The poll's findings were likely skewed due to the ease of signalling one's willingness to uproot over politics, which often far exceeds actual flows.
