Albertans Won't Get Refund for Windshield Washer Fluid Recycling Fee

Albertans paying the 48-cent environmental fee on four-litre windshield washer fluid containers will not get that money back when they drop off the container for recycling, according to Alberta Recycling Management Authority. ARMA says windshield washer fluid containers should not be taken to beverage bottle depots or blue-bin recycling.

Instead, residents can take these containers to participating used oil collection sites, which can be found using ARMA's depot finder. This clarification follows the provincial move to shift automotive fluid containers into the used oil recycling program.

The windshield washer fluid container rate is now 12 cents per litre of container capacity, or 48 cents for a four-litre jug. Environmental fees fund the collection, transportation, and recycling of end-of-life materials, according to ARMA Chief Executive Officer Ed Gugenheimer.
