Alberta's Net Contribution to Federal Finances: A Crucial Factor in Separation Fears

Albertans have long contributed significantly more to federal finances than they receive in transfers and spending. Since 2007-08, their net contribution of $321.9 billion has dwarfed that of other provinces, with British Columbians contributing $87.8 billion and Ontarians contributing $59.6 billion. The seven other provinces have been net recipients, receiving more from Ottawa than they contributed.

According to a study, if Alberta's contribution were removed, income taxpayers in other provinces would pay an average of over $1,000 more per year in taxes to maintain their government services. In some years, the cost was nearly $2,000 per taxpayer.

The same industry that helps Albertans make this large contribution has been under fire by the federal government for over a decade, with policies such as Bill C-69 and the tanker ban limiting market access for Canadian oil and gas. The Carney government has made some changes, but many damaging policies remain in place.

As Alberta considers separation, it's essential that the rest of Canada understands how we arrived here so policymakers can help rectify frustrations in the province. A strong Alberta benefits all Canadians.
