Alberta's Oil Reserves Outpace Major Petroleum States
Alberta's oil reserves are a significant resource for any potential independent country. According to recent estimates, Alberta has about 158.9 billion barrels of proven oil sands reserves. With a population of 5.06 million as of April 2026, this works out to approximately 31,400 barrels per resident.
This puts Alberta ahead of major petroleum-producing states such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates on a per capita basis. These countries have larger populations, but their oil reserves are spread thinner among more people.
Alberta's government currently ranks its proven oil reserves fourth in the world, behind Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. However, older estimates had placed Alberta third, but updated figures have adjusted it to fourth place.
A potential independent Alberta could consider reducing personal income tax or relying more heavily on resource revenues and other taxes to fund public services and meet debt obligations.
