Algeria-Backed Oil Project in Niger Advances, Potentially Doubling Production

Niger is making significant strides in becoming an oil-producing nation as Algeria's state-owned energy company Sonatrach advances its Kafra project. The development comes after more than a decade of exploration, with estimates suggesting that the project holds about 260 million barrels of oil.

The Kafra project has been ongoing since Sonatrach obtained a prospecting permit in 2005 and signed a production-sharing agreement with Niger in 2022. Despite earlier discoveries, the project had remained largely at the exploration stage until recently.

With the advancement of the project, Niger aims to expand its oil industry beyond existing production levels and attract greater investment into its energy sector. Sonatrach subsidiary ENAFOR has commenced drilling at the Kafra Sud-Est 1 well, marking a new phase in Niger's efforts to develop its oil resources.
