Algeria Seals Dominance as Spain's Top Gas Supplier Amid EU-Russia Tensions

Algeria's position as Spain's leading gas supplier has been cemented after it supplied 10,707 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas in July, accounting for 41.7% of Spain's total imports.

This is according to data from Enagás's statistical bulletin published on Monday, which also revealed that Algeria topped the ranking of suppliers to the Spanish market in the first seven months of the year, supplying a cumulative 74,336 GWh of gas and combining pipeline and LNG deliveries.

With the European Commission set to ban all purchases of gas from Russia from January 2027, Algeria is positioning itself as a key player in filling the gap left by Russia's reduced supply due to the war in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

In July, Nigeria took second place in supplying gas to Spain, followed by the US and Russia. The total volume of gas entering the Spanish system in July was 25,647 GWh, with just under half arriving as LNG transported by ships and the remaining 52.4% entering via pipeline.
