Ferrari and BMW are leading the charge in adopting aluminium wiring in their electric vehicles (EVs) as rising copper prices prompt automakers to seek lighter, cost-effective alternatives.

The trend indicates a growing focus on reducing vehicle weight and material costs, with aluminium stepping in due to its select features. According to GEM Mining Consulting, Ferrari has already adopted aluminium power cables, reducing wiring weight by up to 20 per cent.

BMW has extended aluminium conductors into both high- and low-voltage systems used in its eDrive technology, mirroring a broader industry movement as manufacturers including Tesla and several Chinese EV makers integrate aluminium conductors into their vehicle platforms.
