Alunorte Cuts Production Amid Brazilian Gas Supply Disruptions
Alumina production at Alunorte, a refinery in Brazil, has been temporarily reduced to 50% due to disruptions in natural gas supply. The refinery received notification from its supplier, Centrais Elétricas Barcarena (CELBA), which also owns the gas terminal infrastructure in Barcarena, of the supply issues.
To mitigate operational impacts, Alunorte has implemented contingency measures, including purchasing spot gas volumes and requesting direct access to the Barcarena liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving and regasification terminal. The refinery has also temporarily reduced alumina production to align with available gas supplies.
The supplier is seeking to source gas for delivery to Alunorte on market terms that are compatible with its current financial situation. In the meantime, Alunorte will continue efforts to secure long-term alternative gas supplies while preserving its rights under the Gas Supply Agreement.
