Alunorte Cuts Production Amid Gas Supply Disruptions
Norsk Hydro's Alunorte alumina refinery reduced production to 50% due to natural gas supply disruptions from its supplier CELBA, part of New Fortress Group. The company estimates a potential Q3 2026 financial impact on the Bauxite & Alumina segment of USD $75-$100 million.
Norsk Hydro stated that contingency measures are being implemented, including spot gas purchases and requesting direct access to the Barcarena LNG receiving and regasification terminal. The company aims to limit operational disruption while gas availability remains constrained by the supplier.
Alunorte plans to ramp up production to full capacity as soon as natural gas availability normalizes. In parallel, the refinery is working to secure long-term alternative gas supplies while preserving its rights under the current Gas Supply Agreement.
