Alunorte Refinery Cuts Production Amid Gas Supply Disruption
Norsk Hydro's Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil has been hit by a natural gas supply interruption, forcing it to cut production capacity by half. The factory received notification from supplier CELBA that the gas supply had been interrupted.
To adapt to the current situation, Alunorte initiated an emergency production plan and reduced alumina output. Once gas supply returns to normal, the plant will ramp up production as quickly as possible.
The production cut is expected to have a significant impact on Norsk Hydro's bauxite and alumina business segment in the third quarter of 2026, with estimated losses ranging from $75 million to $100 million.
