Alunorte's Gas Crunch Exposes Industry Vulnerability
The global aluminium industry's vulnerability lies in the gas pipelines that feed calcination kilns at alumina refineries. Alunorte, a Norsk Hydro facility in Brazil, recently faced operational dilemmas due to reduced natural gas availability from supplier CELBA.
Norsk Hydro decided to pursue self-importer status through Brazil's Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis (ANP) to source LNG directly. This change represents a structural upgrade in Alunorte's energy sovereignty and reduces single-supplier concentration risk for all future operations.
The financial impact of the production curtailment and above-contract gas procurement costs is estimated to be between USD $75 million and USD $100 million on the Bauxite and Alumina segment during Q3 2026. The combined effect of lost alumina production volume (100,000 to 120,000 tonnes) and cost inflation due to spot gas procurement compresses margins independently of volume.
