Ampol's Earnings Soar on War-Linked Price Surges

Ampol, Australia's largest transport fuel provider, saw its interim earnings soar in the first half of 2026 due to the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy prices. The company's net profit on a replacement cost basis jumped more than four times to $857.2 million in the six months ended June 30, from $180.2 million a year earlier.

Ampol's chief executive, Matt Halliday, attributed the surge in earnings to the company's ability to secure fuel supplies and capitalize on the market dislocation caused by the conflict. He noted that while the market volatility provided a benefit to Ampol's financial results, the company's supply responsiveness, trading capabilities, refinery reliability, customer and supplier relationships, as well as its retail segmentation strategy all contributed to meeting its customer needs.

The Middle East war has continued to have a volatile impact on crude oil and energy product markets into the second half of 2026, although Ampol stated that this has also helped regional refining margins. The company declared an interim dividend of 18.5 cents and said that July 2026 earnings were ahead of the prior corresponding period, underpinned by strong refinery earnings.
