AngloGold Profit Surges on Higher Gold Prices
AngloGold Ashanti's second-quarter profit surged by 58% to $1.01 billion, despite a 7% decline in gold production. This significant increase is attributed to higher bullion prices, which rose by 35% to an average of $4,446 per ounce.
The company's earnings are closely tied to the price of gold, as operating costs remain relatively stable while revenue increases with the price. This means that a rise in gold prices can lead to disproportionate earnings growth, even if production volumes fall.
The surge in profit is also due in part to the sale of non-core assets, such as the Serra Grande mine in Brazil. AngloGold has maintained its full-year 2026 production guidance range of 2.8 million to 3.17 million ounces, with a substantial implied second-half requirement.
