Angola's Offshore Gas Frontier Reshaped by Sonangol's Katambi Discovery
Angola's Sonangol has made a significant gas discovery at Katambi in the Benguela Basin, which is reshaping the country's offshore future. The Katambi-2 appraisal well exceeded reservoir quality parameters and confirmed the presence of non-associated natural gas.
The discovery is a result of Angola's 2018 presidential decree, which opened up non-associated gas exploration and production to private investment for the first time. This structural liberalization introduced a fiscal incentive package that included a 10-year tax exemption for qualifying new gas projects.
The Katambi-2 well confirmed a total productive interval thickness of approximately 331 meters, with an average reservoir porosity of 9-12%. The stabilized gas flow rate was 41 MMscfd, and the condensate flow rate was 1,160 barrels per day. Preliminary production potential is above 100 MMscfd.
