Antofagasta Charges Ahead as Copper Scarcity Drives London Market
Antofagasta PLC (LSE:ANTO) has emerged as one of the strongest performers on the London market, driven by mining shares and a firm copper price. The Chilean-focused producer's growth projects are central to its production outlook, with investment in concentrator capacity and desalination infrastructure aimed at lifting output materially in the years ahead.
The supply story for copper remains a key factor, with constrained mine supply and electrification-driven demand providing support for the metal. However, new discoveries are scarce and take a long time to permit and build, keeping the supply response sluggish even when prices are attractive.
Producer margins depend on far more than just the metal price, with energy costs, labour agreements, and treatment and refining charges all feeding into unit costs. A firm copper price with rising input costs delivers a very different outcome from a firm price with contained costs.
