Aramco Joins Mineral Rush, Puts Africa on Notice

Saudi Arabia's state oil giant Aramco is expanding its reach into mineral exploration and hard-rock mining, creating a new rival in Africa. The company will form a joint venture with the Saudi Arabian Mining Company, known as Maaden, to explore an area of approximately 182,000 square kilometres inside the kingdom.

The proposed venture will target copper, zinc, lead, and rare earth elements, with Aramco holding a 49% stake and Maaden owning the remaining 51%. This move marks a significant expansion of Saudi Arabia's critical-minerals strategy, which seeks to reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers. By leveraging Aramco's financial strength, geological information, and drilling capabilities, Saudi Arabia aims to become a major player in the global mineral market.

The impact on Africa will be multifaceted, with both opportunities and challenges arising from this development. On one hand, African countries may face increased competition for mining investment, talent, and exploration spending. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia's planned processing plants could create a new market for African minerals, particularly if local mines cannot supply sufficient raw materials.
